If you fear someone might try to look at your device and read your data, it is possible to set a password so that all data will be deleted after a set number of incorrect attempts. This will erase everything on your phone if someone has not figured out the code after 10 tries.
A good way to keep the pages from closing is to open other one in a new tab. If you use Safari, tap the link and hold it until the menu option becomes visible. This pop-up menu provides you with the opportunity to use a new tab to open an additional link.
